Professor Cecily Begley


Cecily holds the Chair of Nursing and Midwifery in Trinity College Dublin and is active in developing research, and educational initiatives at undergraduate and postgraduate level in Ireland. She was appointed a member of the Expert Group on Midwifery and Children’s Nurse Education set up to plan two direct-entry degree programmes, and on the National Implementation Group that ensured their commencement throughout Ireland in October 2006. Prof Begley was a member of the National Council for Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery in Ireland for the first five years of its existence, and worked on the sub-group for Educational Standards for Advanced Midwife Practitioners.

Prof. Begley has a 25-year history of research activity and has led many research teams to successful completion of diverse projects, focusing mainly on physiological childbirth, midwife-led and women-centred maternity care, and self-esteem and assertiveness in student nurses and midwives. She has been successful in obtaining over €2,500,000 in research funding in the last six years.

She is a member of national research Review Committees and is a member of the International Confederation of Midwives’ Research Advisory Network. She has editorial and/or reviewing commitments for 7 medical, nursing, or midwifery journals and has published widely on nursing and midwifery clinical and education issues.
